Introduction
Backgroud
Nagarik Aawaz, which in English means the "voice of the citizen", was initiated in July 2001, as a forum of concerned development activists/organizations, who in a rapidly deteriorating security environment felt the urgency to advocate/work for peace. The forum grew to provide a platform for the civil society to understand the impacts and implications of the violent armed conflict as well as to be proactive and respond to the present needs. Two months of regular meetings resulted in the realization of the need for registering an organization with an ad-hoc Board.
Understanding the political situation and the impact of the conflict, NA began its peace work without a clear understanding of what may be the best issue it could tackle. Owing to escalating conflict and intermittent emergency periods, NA had to respond to growing needs (largely for the displaced community and particularly for directly affected youths) and escalating violence. During this period, there was little time for a formal review and planning. However, as NA's work has been process oriented, it has taken time whenever possible to strengthen its team and have internal reviews and assessments.
