Sahakarya Shantiko

With the intention of reweaving social safety nets at the community level by motivating the local people, NA has conceived of and initiated this program with minimal donor support. Upon the recommendations of SAP-Nepal and Tewa, seven well-established NGOs working in 7 districts (Ilam, Janakpur, Okhaldhunga, Doti, Dang, Surkhet and Bajura) have been selected as partners.

Objectives

  • To engage local level organizations in peace work
  • To create social safety nets by mobilizing local resources and community people
  • To mobilize the broader local communities for peace-building initiatives

Outcomes

  • An introductory and initial concept design workshop was held from May 31 to June 1, 2003 with the partnering NGOs.
  • NA team visited the partner organizations in Western regions in November 2003 and Eastern regions in February 2004 to begin the process of community mobilization for peace as well as to analyze the situation in the regions.
  • Partners in Doti and Janakpur initiated and adopted DYVP in the context of their own districts, with seed grants from NA.
  • Five graduates of DYVP worked as peace ambassadors in Ilam, Janakpur, Doti and Surkhet hosted by the Sahakarya Shantiko partner organizations.
  • Six partner organizations including Nagarik Aawaz implemented Communities for Peace Program (CFP) in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Ilam, Dhanusha, Doti, Surkhet and Bajura districts with the financial and technical assistance of CEDPA/Nepal for 15 months from August 2005 to December 2006.
