Immediate Relief Support (Sahara Kosh)

The Sahara Kosh is a fund created through individual donations to provide immediate relief support to conflict victims and needy peoples. Through it NA has been providing immediate relief support to the victims of conflict. It has focused on widows, orphans, aging parents, single women and girls who are receiving little to no support from their extended families, neighbors government or political parties. This support is provided financially through NA's "Sahara Kosh" or by connecting them to other support organizations.

Objectives

  • To generate resources and funds from organizations and individuals for relief support to those adversely affected by conflict
  • To provide immediate relief support to the most vulnerable people affected by the conflict
  • To connect the most needy of people affected by the conflict with the appropriate support organizations

Outcomes

  • A team of counselors immediately responded to major attacks in Ilam during March and Palpa in February 2006, by providing psychological support within a week of attack to the community members of Ilam and Palpa.
  • A team led by Rita Thapa (CEO, NA) visited Surkhet district during March 2005, to learn the situation and to extend possible emergency relief support to the displaced communities taking refuse there. With a grant from Tewa, the displaced Jumli families living in camps were provided with cooking and water dishes, a month's supply of green vegetable, milk and toiletries.
  • Responding immediately to an incident of brutal massacre, bombing and destruction of property and yearly harvests in Somani village of Nawalparasi on 16 April 2005, a team of Rita Thapa, Dr. Aruna Upreti (Vice-Chair of NA Exec. Board) and Govinda Koirala (Office Assistant, NA), went there to extend possible emergency relief support to the affected families.
  • Rs. 5,23,666 is raised till date and Rs. 4,66,263 has been the expenses
  • From the Sahara Kosh, NA has been able to:
    • Help conflict affected families with their house rent and children's education,
    • Donated Rs 25,000 on 12 April 2006 towards people's movement fund established at the Kathamandu Model Hospital for treatment and medical assistance to the injured citizens during the 19-day people's movement for democracy from 6-24 April 2006.
    • Partially cover the medical costs of people injured due to present conflict and immediately needing medical attention,
    • Provided livelihood support to people adversely affected by the conflict for few months,
    • Provided a safety net to three conflict widows, by offering them a learning space and a monthly stipend.
    • Provided travel costs to many displaced people, thus allowing them to return to their homes.
