Concerned with the growing number of displaced and homeless people on the streets of Kathmandu, NA initiated Shanti Sahayog Bhancha, a weekly "peace kitchen" to feed the hungry. Shanti Sahayog Bhancha is a joint effort of NA and the local community. NA's DYVP youth volunteers cook and serve at Shanti Sahayog Bhancha at Jawalakhel Chowk on Thursdays. The lunches are financially supported by donations from the local community, individuals and organizations.
Objectives
To provide displaced and homeless people with a fresh, hot and nutritious meal once a week.
To create community awareness by involving them in a good cause.
To empower and emotionally heal the DYVP youth volunteers by giving them an opportunity to serve those needier than themselves.
Outcomes
199 Shanti Sahayog Bhancha have been held to date, with approximately 90-130 displaced and/or homeless people being fed in each bhancha.
The DYVP youth volunteers are actively engaged in running each week's Shanti Sahayog Bhancha, and have expressed that they feel empowered by being able to serve others.
